The Growing Use of Technology in the Justice System


We always hear about how cybercrime is on the rise, and how criminals across the world are using technology to their advantage. Well, those in the justice system are not far behind. To ensure that the public is kept safe and that crime is kept in check, those in the legal system are using cutting edge technology too. Here are some examples.

Using Big Data to Fight Crime

According to IBM, the world generates about 2.5 quintillion bytes of data every single day. This data is used by many industries, as well as the criminal justice system.

For example, information on DNA and fingerprints are stored in databases, which are used to identify suspects more quickly. Added to that big data can be utilized to pick out trends in crime and that in turn can be used to take the required action by law enforcement.

Through comprehensive crime data reporting into the National Incident-Based Reporting System, which focuses on bringing more transparency into crime reporting in the United States.

Detection, Monitoring, and Positioning Systems

Using various forms of technology, law enforcement officers can now detect and solve crimes more efficiently. Some of the technologies being used to solve crimes are:

        Automatic License Plate Scanning systems enable law enforcement officers to instantly see if a car in their area is stolen or not.

        Surveillance Camera technology has changed dramatically over the years, and today, video and streaming quality have improved so much that crimes are much easier to detect.

In-Car Computers

With transportation technology evolving in leaps and bounds, in-car computers really help law enforcement gather more accurate data on a crime or accident scene. In fact, this technology is not just being used by law enforcement officers. Even a personal injury law firm can use this technology to prove injury claims in litigation.

Specifically, for police officers, police cars are fitted with computers that are connected to mobile devices. What this does is encourage paperless reporting, increase data collation accuracy and even save money for the forces.

The processing of reports becomes more efficient as officers can upload reports directly from the police cars. This allows officers of the law to spend more time in the field rather than be chained to a desk completing reports. In-car computers also allow officers to get in touch with their dispatch teams for assistance or backup.

Robotics for Law Enforcement

Robotics is one of the newest technologies that is expected to help law enforcement fight crime. Robots are currently being used by the police forces in reconnaissance missions that are considered extremely dangerous.

In Dubai, robots are already being used for the payment of fines, asking of basic questions and accessing basic police information. Even China has deployed robots in its police force.

According to a study conducted by WinterGreen Research, the use of robots in the justice system is expected to grow exponentially in the next few years.
